つぶれる

Description

「潰れる」は、物がおされて形がこわれたり、会社やお店がだめになってなくなったりする時に使います。

"つぶれる" is used when something is crushed and its shape is broken, or when a company or store fails and disappears.

予定がなくなる時にも「今日の計画がつぶれた」のように言えます。

It can also be used when plans are canceled, as in "Today's plan was つぶれた."

Meanings

潰れるtsubureru

to get crushed, squashed, or smashed out of shape

かばんの中でパンが潰れた。

The bread got squished in my bag.

潰れるtsubureru

to go bankrupt; to fail (business)

あの店は去年潰れた。

That shop went out of business last year.

潰れるtsubureru

to be wasted or ruined (time, plans)

雨で今日の予定が潰れた。

Today's plans were ruined by the rain.
